Now before I go any further, I want to be very, very clear. I do not diagnose, treat, prevent or cure any illness. Okay, are we clear? I sure hope so. If you’re sick or think you’re sick, go to a doctor. That goes for physical or mental illness.

So having established that…

In psychic school one of the first things they teach you is ‘how to blow a rose.’ It’s an energetic tool we use to separate ourselves from our readees (the individuals we read). A very important tool, indeed! To read someone, you must ‘match them’ — make an energetic connection. When you’re done reading, you’re supposed ‘make separations’ or end that connection. That’s the healthy way to begin and end a reading.

When I first started reading at the institute, I was like a kid in a candy shop. I was doing formal readings several times a week and it was like the world was opening up to me. I was in a safe, supportive environment, and was taking full advantage of the institute’s reputation to bring in a long line of people wanting to get read. And I guess the Universe wanted to teach me something important early on… separate. And, as a matter of act, the institute was teaching separation from day one. I was just such a neophyte to a formal reading protocol that I wasn’t good at it yet or more likely just not listening that well.

So, I went along my merry way. I saw all kinds of energy: past lives, relationships, stuck energy, flowing energy, dead family members, dieties, pets, injuries, accidents. You name it, up to and including, colds, flu, cancer, arthritis, low thyroid — a plethora o’ ailments. And I began to get sick, really physically ill. Not with anything specific, just extremely run down and almost not able to move my body. But I kept forcing myself to come and read because I loved it so much.

Finally, about a month in, one of the ‘first year’ instructors took a look at me and kindly but pointedly, said, “Have you considered blowing a rose?”

“Well, I feel sheepish!” I said to myself in the way Robin Williams did in the movie Alladin. Because for the last month I had been doing reading after reading after reading, matching my readee’s energy which sometimes included illness… and I was never ending that connection.

Well, I paid special attention to the ‘clean out’ that night. Clean out is where you make your separations from your readee. Pretty much instantly, and certainly completely by the next morning, my health was fully restored.

From then on and to this day, making separations is a critical part of any reading I do.

Separations — it’s not just a formality!
